General Tripwires Testing

This guide covers testing standard tripwires including AWS credentials, MySQL dumps, and Windows process monitors. General tripwire testing validates Horizon3 infrastructure components without impacting your customer environment.

Using the Test Tripwire Button

The easiest way to test your tripwires is through the NodeZero portal interface:

  1. Navigate to Tripwire Details: Go to the specific tripwire you want to test in the NodeZero portal
  2. Click Test Tripwire: At the bottom of the tripwire details page, click the Test Tripwire button
  3. Monitor for Alerts: The system will simulate an attack against the tripwire and generate a test alert
  4. Verify Results: Check that alerts are properly delivered through all configured channels

Infrastructure Testing Only

General tripwire testing using the Test Tripwire button only tests the Horizon3 infrastructure and components. This includes alert generation, delivery mechanisms, and integration endpoints. It does not generate actual activity or events in your customer environment.

This built-in testing feature is the recommended method for validating tripwire functionality as it:

  • Safely tests Horizon3 infrastructure without impacting your environment
  • Automatically generates test alerts through the proper detection pipeline
  • Validates alert delivery and integration endpoints
  • Doesn't require access to target systems or generate customer environment activity
